Botanical Garden
Grishko National Botanical Garden of NAS of Ukraine belongs to the environment protection fund of Ukraine. It is subject to complex protection and refers to the lands of environmental, historical and cultural significance that are protected as national heritage of the state.
Today Grishko NBG of NAS of Ukraine takes one of the leading place among the largest European gardens with its variety of plants collections, size of the territory, level of researches. The Garden includes 8 research departments, the unique fund of NBG numbers about 11,180 taxons that refer to 220 families and 1,347 genera.
Many years of work of Grishko NBG resulted in unique floristic complexes ‘Woods of Ukrainian lowland’, ‘Carpathians of Ukraine’, ‘Steppe of Ukraine’, ‘Crimea’, ‘Caucasus’, ‘Central Asia’, ‘Altai and Western Siberia’, ‘Far East’. It is an attempt to recreate both the greenery of a certain geographical zone and its landform and some typical landscapes. Arboretum is a real decoration of the Botanical Garden. The collection of lilacs and magnolias became a trademark both of the Botanical Garden and Kiev long ago.
The collection fund has been established and it numbers over 3,400 genera and sorts of plants. Long-term studies of genetic methods in selecting floristic plants allowed creating new sorts of golden daisies, dahlias, asters, phloxes, flags, sword lilies, peonies, clematises, lawn grasses, etc. According to their decorative features, the new sorts meet international standards and awards from numerous exhibitions and competitions confirm this.
Grishko NBG has unique collections of tropical and subtropical plants (about 3,000 taxons) in greenhouses of over 5 thous.sq.m in total area. The collection of tropical orchids is one of the largest and numbers more than 350 natural types and species that refer to 150 genera.
In Herbarium collection, species of Ukrainian flora are represented in the best way. There is a large herbarium collection from Caucasus, Central Asia and Kazakhstan, Far East. Collections from Caucasus are the largest in Ukraine. Herbarium has considerable collections of flora from other countries (Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Great Britain, etc).
One of the major tasks of the Botanical Garden is to make studies in the field of environmental protection, to create a base that will support the gene pool of plants and entire biological diversity, to educate about ecology and environmental protection.
